Our Story

The Cuyuna Lakes Trail Association was formed in 2001 as a nonprofit, volunteer advocacy organization devoted to bringing an official Minnesota State Trail to the heart of Minnesota’s Cuyuna Lakes region. Shortly thereafter, the Association’s efforts were invaluable in securing Minnesota legislative approval to officially birth what came to be known as the Cuyuna Lakes State Trail. In the year’s since, the Cuyuna Lakes State Trail has grown to nine miles of scenic trailway, linking the communities of Riverton, Ironton, Crosby and Deerwood (with connector access to Cuyuna). The Trail is paved and durable, highly accessible and available in nearly all weather conditions. A wide range of recreational activities are supported, regardless of season. Today, the Trail also serves as a central artery throughout the Cuyuna Country State Recreation Area and the region’s award-winning mountain bike system. The Association remains committed to the Trail’s master plan, which supports continued growth of the Trail to Brainerd/Baxter as well as Aitkin, extending the Trail to over thirty miles, while providing a seamless connection to other Minnesota State Trails.

In its endeavors, the Association is committed to transparency and public involvement. It strives to be a good neighbor, build consensus, and actively listen. It’s primary functions are to:

  • Encourage implementation of the Trail’s master plan

  • Increase public awareness of the Trail and it’s benefits

  • Assist in maintaining the existing Trail

  • Recommend appropriate corridors for future expansion

  • Lobby public and private entities as relevant

  • Interface with a wide range of constituencies and stakeholders

  • On behalf of the Minnesota DNR, coordinate grant requests and land purchases

  • Solicit matching funds when necessary

  • In general, be the public’s voice for the continued success of the Cuyuna Lakes State Trail
